River Sweep Jamaica

River Sweep is an environmental activity in which the river banks and channels are cleared of debris. NEPT spearheaded this project for the first time on July 24th and 25th2012. The Upper and Lower sections of the South Negril River, Orange Bay River and the Green Island River were targeted for cleaning.

   

NEPT receives Small Grant from NEPA

NEPT received JA$700,000.00 from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) for the implementation of a project entitled "Improving Negril Marine Park Management Effectiveness Through Digital Media Communication" The funds committed to  NEPT were made available through funds under the project entitled “Strengthening the Operational and Financial Sustainability of the National Protected Area System” being implemented by the National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA) with project activities funded by the Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Jamaica.

The objectives of the project were:1) To develop and implement a public awareness programme for the Negril Marine Park that enhances community understanding of, and support for, the marine park and resources by January 31, 2013 and ( 2) To re-establish historical transect monitoring programme for coral reefs and conduct a minimum of 3 monitoring exercises by January 31, 2013. The project was overall interesting and the achievements included the conversion of 53 video tapes with historical video footage of the Marine resources within the Negril Marine Park to modern DVD format, purchasing of scuba diving tanks, buoyancy control devices, wetsuits and an underwater camera and housing. Production of a 15 minutes educational video about the Negril Marine Park, Orange Bay Fish Sanctuary and the Negril Great Morass as well as redevelopment of  NEPT’s website.
